What is LANAP?

Laser Periodontal Therapy (LANAP) in San AntonioDuring the LANAP procedure, Dr. Young uses a Millennium Periolase dental laser at different settings to remove diseased gum tissue, eliminate the bacteria that cause gum disease. The laser also stimulates the regeneration of new bone and gum tissues that will reattach to the teeth.

With the laser, only diseased tissue is removed and healthy tissue is left intact. Thus gum tissue loss is minimal and is far less invasive than standard surgical procedures. Because the laser seals up the affected tissues as it operates, there is no need for sutures and healing time is considerably shorter than with conventional gum surgery.

Benefits of LANAP

  • There are no scalpels or sutures needed.
  • There is far less discomfort both during and after the procedure than with conventional surgical treatments.
  • Treatment is faster than with traditional periodontal procedures. There is no need for multiple appointments stretched out over many weeks.
  • There is far less loss of gum tissue and/or gum recession as a result of the procedure, compared to traditional treatments.
  • The minimally invasive nature of the treatment makes it safer for patients with bleeding problems and other health concerns.
  • Recovery time after the procedure is much shorter than with conventional surgery. Most people can return to work the day after the procedure.

How the LANAP procedure works

Laser Periodontal Therapy (LANAP) in San Antonio

Dr. Young can perform the LANAP procedure in just a few appointments.

The LANAP procedure can be done in a couple of appointments and is relatively quick. Dr. Young will perform a number of precisely targeted actions that clean out the bacterial infection, remove diseased tissue, and stimulate new healthy tissue to reattach to the teeth. This creates renewed strong support for your teeth.

Removal of diseased gum tissue

A tiny laser fiber (about the thickness of three human hairs) is inserted into the gum pocket and the diseased surface layer of gum tissue is removed. The laser will also eliminate bacteria in the pocket and in the tissues below the gum line.

Scaling and root planing

Dr. Young will then remove the bacterial plaque and calculus with an ultrasonic scaler and smooth out (plane) the tooth roots so the gums can reattach and new bacteria cannot lodge easily.

Stimulation of new bone

The pocket is now opened up down to where the bone meets the tooth. Dr. Young lasers the bone tissue and tooth root, killing even more bacteria and stimulating the bone to regenerate and form a stronger support for the tooth.

Sealing the pocket for healing

The laser is used to finish cleaning the pocket and seal the pocket closed so new bacteria cannot enter. No sutures are required.

Reducing bite trauma

Part of the procedure includes adjusting the bite surfaces on certain teeth as necessary to remove any undue bite forces that would traumatize the teeth in the future. Excessive bite forces can lead to problems with gum recession and can jeopardize the overall health of the affected teeth.
